City of Ekurhuleni replies to Ward 91 issues

Illegal dumping can only be prevented if residents and the municipality work together.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said that the Environmental Resource and Waste Management Department takes note of the concerns raised by the Norkem Park residents regarding the cleanliness of the streets, particularly Fred Els Avenue.

He added that in an effort to ensure that the residents live in an environment that is clean and not harmful to their well-being, a weekly refuse collection service is rendered consistently and as per schedule.

“It is also worth mentioning that the aforesaid refuse collection services have been on schedule for some weeks now.

It must be mentioned that there are some residents who do not have high regard for a clean environment always disposing or abandoning waste illegally on the pavements and open spaces.

“This abnormal behaviour is very rife across the city and such activities usually take place at night.

Therefore it is difficult to detect. It is only through a collaborative effort of both residents and the municipality that these activities can be stopped.

“One of those efforts is for residents to take ownership of their neighbourhood thereby discouraging anyone from causing illegal dumping of waste.

This will enable the municipality to maintain the level of services that it provides with limited resources to the residents.

“The department would appreciate if and when residents plan to do a clean-up of their neighbourhood that the details of the envisaged clean-up program (date, time, targeted area) be shared timeously so that necessary resources can be sourced or arranged.”

He added that it is in this regard that the exact location where the clean-up took place to be made available to enable the department to clear the accumulated refuse bags.
