East Rand man shot seven times in a possible “gang-related” incident

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help find the victims’s killers.

A man died after he was shot seven times while in a parked car on Goedehoop Avenue, Reiger Park on Monday evening (August 20), in what authorities say might have been a “gang-related” incident, Boksburg Advertiser reports.

According to the Reiger Park police spokesperson, Constable Jan Mokwana, the deceased, Liefie Rolson Kotzen, was sitting in a parked black Volkswagen Polo when an unknown gunman approached and opened fire on Kotzen. An investigation revealed that the killer used a 9mm pistol.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and declared Kotzen dead on the spot.

Mokwana said police received a complaint of a shooting in the area at about 7pm, and upon officers’ arrival on the scene, they found an unresponsive man who had sustained seven gunshot wounds.

No persons have been arrested, but a murder case has been registered.

“It is believed that the motive was gang-related, as it’s rumoured that the deceased belongs to a gang called Sourboys, responsible for drug trades as well as gun smuggling within the East Rand and is a resident in Boksburg.

“The group of suspects that shot the deceased is believed to be members of the rival gang who are unknown at this stage.

“The killing is being investigated by the Provincial Investigating Unit (PIU).”

One resident told the media that the word on the street is that the man was shot in gang violence, adding that many residents fear that Kotzen’s killing may trigger a resurgence of a “gang war” in the township.

Anyone with information may call the Reiger Park police on 071 678 0992 or 011 916 7000.
