THE ripple control system in Kempton Park is still in a good working condition.
Ripple control is the most common form of load control, and is used by the metro to reduce electricity demand during peak periods, thereby decreasing the unit cost of energy and the need for load shedding.
It therefore motivates the customer to shift the operation of thermal heating appliances (geysers) into low demand periods. This is one of the effective methods to make sure that load demand does not exceed available capacity, Mr Sam Modiba, metro spokesman, said.
Combined with other energy efficiency methods, effective ripple control reduces the rate at which customers can be inconvenienced by load shedding.
The ripple control system has the transmission hours programmed to automatically switch on/off geysers according to the load management schedule as follows:
Monday to Friday: 7am switches geyser off.
Monday to Friday: 10am switches geyser on.
Monday to Friday: 6pm switches geyser off.
Monday to Friday: 8pm switches geyser on.
Saturday and Sunday: 9am switches geyser off.
Saturday and Sunday: 12pm switches geyser on.
