Ask for identity

All metro contractors, including meter readers, have a municipal identity card

THE metro advises homeowners to insist on an identity card to anyone who claims to be an employee of the metro prior to them gaining entry or commencing work on the premises.

All metro contractors, including meter readers, have a municipal identity card with their photograph on and they are to present the card at any business or private premises they visit to do a job.

The assurance comes after an incident in Bedfordview when an alleged robber impersonated a municipal meter reader, thereby raising questions on the identification of municipal field workers.

“We have an obligation to ensure that our employees and contractors produce positive identification. In the same breath we request residents to be vigilant and request positive identification. If not satisfied, residents have the right to call the emergency call centre on 011-458-0911 or 10177, or when using cell phones, dial 112 (fire, ambulance and metro police).

Other important numbers community members should be aware of include the Ekurhuleni Municipal Service Complaints line, 0860-543-000.
