NORKEM Park High’s first soccer team ended their long season by winning the Grey College/Nedbank Football Tournament in Bloemfontein this weekend.
They won the final 2-1 against Westville Boys High and took home the R25 000 cheque.
Mpho Matekgane was selected midfielder of the tournament. He, along with and Allen Sono, were also selected for the tournament side.
Norkem started the tournament on the wrong foot, losing 5-2 to hosts Grey College in the first game but bounced back beating the Glen 4-1, Glenwood High School 5-2 and George Campbell 3-0 in the group stages.
They beat Brebner High School 2-0 in the quarter finals and secured a 4-1 win against St David’s on penalties in the semi-finals.
Sanele Masheko scored an early goal in the final after lobbying the keeper from his left back position and Bryan Senwamadi added the second just after half time.
The team’s coach, Andrew Gifford, was named coach of the tournament and shared this with his assistants Junior Mwape and Mvuyiso Vikwa.
Norkem have had a history making season, winning the Ekurhuleni Schools League and cup undefeated, making them league winners for the past four years. They also won the Benoni High Tournament in May and were semi-finalists in both the St David’s and St Peters tournaments, losing both on penalty shoot outs.
The under 14 team also achieved a league and cup double, proving the school’s depth in talent.
“We would like to thank our sponsors, Douglas Gillan of EEC, for the tracksuits and Andre Lubbe of Flame Diner. Their continued support is appreciated. The first team will be concentrating on the Kay Motsepe Cup next year where the winning school can win a million rand for their school,” said Gifford.
