EKURHULENI Metro Municipality placed over 330 young people to different companies in a public-private partnership to help graduates horn their skills, acquire experience and be employable.
Metro spokesman, Sam Modiba, said the companies involved were, among others, Transnet, Imperial Logistics, Phoenix Film, TNT, Bidair Cargo and OR Tambo International Airport.
He said the 335 people placed in private and public institutions excluded 600 youths absorbed by various departments within the City of Ekurhuleni.
He said the job placement happened at the cost of the municipality and was aimed at assisting graduates gain much needed work experience and creating jobs.
“The municipality pays a stipend of up to R2 500 to all these graduates. We know that some graduates completed their qualifications under very difficult situations. Some have become the only hope for their families and we understand that it must be demotivating to complete studies and still be unemployed.”
The job placement programme followed a job summit in June where the municipality received over 10 000 CVs from unemployed youngsters.
The municipality recently advertised over 1 700 job opportunities, ranging from call centre agents, community peace corps to fire reserve force staff.
A further 3 000 work opportunities will be created before the end of the year as part of the Lungile Mtshali Poverty Alleviation Programme.
