“AT the rate we are moving, it is clear this municipality listens to the people,” Clr Mondli Gungubele, executive mayor of Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality, said.
At the November council meeting he reflected on some service delivery successes of the first quarter of the 2013/14 financial year which started on July 1.
Nearly 12 000 people received services through the mobile clinic units from June to August, which was an increase compared to previous years. A total of 1,6 million people received help from the clinics, compared to the original target of 1,3 million.
The number of patients receiving ARV treatments was 9 495, exceeding the target of 9 000.
A new library was completed in Winnie Mandela.
The electricity department installed 2 193 solar PV lighting units, 443 more than the target. Eleven new high mast lights were installed in the Springs area alone.
Gungubele said during the pat six months of this financial year Ekurhuleni built 32,8km of road throughout the city, as well as 11,5km of new storm water drains and 5km of pedestrian walkway.
There was also an increased provision for the integrated transport system by introducing the Vosloorus/Johannesburg route.
8 000 new indigents were registered and 340 early childhood centres accredited.
Gungubele also gave feedback on the Mayoral Service Delivery Intervention Programme, which indicated that major service delivery challenges were a huge problem. The common thread of challenges in Winnie Mandela, Freedom Square, Mayfield, Etwatwa and Zonk’zizwe was housing, water, sanitation, electricity, access roads and solid waste removal.
“There is a lot of work the metro is doing and I am certain we can improve in certain aspects of our work,” Gungubele concluded.
