Head boy debates in Istanbul

They were victorious over Romania, Ukraine, DISA Mathematicians, China and Sweden

SAKHILE Twala, head boy at Rhodesfield THS, competed in the fourth annual Eurasian Schools Debating Championship (ESDC) in Istanbul, Turkey in January.

He was selected at last year’s SA National Schools Debating Championships (SANSDC13) where he was a member of the Gauteng provincial team.

They competed as Gauteng in Turkey.

He said that although they weren’t crowned the Eurasian champions, they could still be proud of themselves.

In the preliminary rounds (international debating offers eight of them), they were victorious over Romania, Ukraine, DISA Mathematicians, China and Sweden.

The Gauteng team went on to defeat the Romanian national debate team in the quarter-finals and the Turkish national team in the semis. In the final, however, the Singaporean national debate team proved too strong for them.

“In all fairness, for a composite provincial delegation to have defeated national teams and to have reached the final is an outstanding achievement on its own,” Twala said.

“Now that I’ve been exposed to international debating, I look forward to this year’s SA trials, as I’m one of the 12 SA Academy trialists who was selected from SANSDC13.”
