Tons of bricks, designated for building new pavements in Emoyeni and Emangweni sections in Tembisa, have become a target of unscrupulous residents.
The companies contracted to council to deliver the bricks realised the bricks were disappearing quickly.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s (EMPD) Loss Control and Investigations Unit was brought in board to investigate.
The police found that residents from 10 houses in the area had helped themselves to the bricks. Some of residents were already in the process of paving their own yards using the stolen material.
According to the EMPD’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, investigations are underway as some of the residents claimed the bricks had been sold to them by the contractors.
EMPD officers have also been assisting the Roads Department in retrieving the stolen bricks since last week.
“The EMPD is continuing with its in-depth investigations in an effort to expose all the people involved,” said Chief Supt Kgasago.
