Local athletes shine at competition

Three athletes from the Tembisa Athletics Club represented Gauteng at the Athletics South Africa (ASA) competition held in Cape Town recently.

Boitumelo Ramoshaba (18) competed in the 3 000 metre event and finished in the top five.

Thomas Chigaringo (19) competed in the 100 metre event and qualified for the finals.

Sandile Mdluli (20) competed in the 800 metre event and also made it to the finals.

The trio were awarded gold and bronze medals after the competition.

They were also selected to compete in the ASA Senior competition.

After the competition in Cape Town, they also competed at the Tuks Athletics Club on Monday and Tuesday last week.

Tembisa Athletics Club coach, Elvis Khoza, said he was happy to see the club succeeding.

“I am excited because I began this club to see young people in Tembisa going places in athletics. Many people concentrate more on soccer and do not get involve with other sporting codes. My aim is to see these young people competing at the Olympics or international competitions,” said Khoza.

He added that ASA selected Tembisa to host the cross country competition.

“We are selected as the best to host the cross country competition in two consecutive years. Last year’s competition was a success and this year we are hoping young people will respond positively and join the competition. We are urging them to consider athletics,” said Khoza.

The competition will be held at the Multi-Purpose Park on May 31.

Registration are open on the day, and start from 9am.

Athletes with no temporary license will pay R10.

Those interested in joining can attend the training sessions at Tembisa High School from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
