The South African National Roads Agency Limted (Sanral), advises motorists travelling south-bound on the R21 freeway north-east of the Kempton Park CBD to take note of a temporary deviation.
The deviation will be in place from Tuesday, June 24.
The deviation is located between the OR Tambo International Airport and Tshwane, about 400 metres south of the R23 interchange.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution when approaching this short deviation of the south-bound carriageway. The deviation will be in effect for about 12 months.
In February 2014, Sanral notified the public about the temporary deviation of the R21 freeway near the R23 interchange to allow for the construction of two new bridges.
The work is being funded by TRIDEVCO, a developer who is building the Witfontein Extension 55 township on either side of the R21. A new road, the Riverfields Boulevard Underpass, is to be constructed under the R21 which will link the two sections of the development to each other.
This development is supported by the Ekurhuleni Municipality.
During this phase, the following areas will be affected:
- Only the south-bound carriageway will be deviated at this stage.
- The relocation of traffic onto the deviation will take place on Tuesday, June 24, starting at 10am and will be completed by 3pm.
- During switching over, the existing four lanes will be reduced to two lanes at a time to allow for the painting of new road lines. Also, concrete barriers will be placed across the existing R21 carriageway on the edges of the deviation for the protection of the workers.
- Speed will be reduced to 60 km/h and traffic officials will be in attendance during the switching over process.
- The deviation will remain in place for a period of 12 months, during which time a speed reduction to 100 km/h will be in force.
- The existing four lanes will remain open for the duration of the deviation. Motorists are requested to be vigilant during the switching over exercise and to comply with the speed reduction signs and instructions given by traffic officials.
Sanral apologised for the inconvenience caused during the construction period.
