ARTISTS who want to enter the annual National Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards can do so in August.
This is the 27th year the competition will be hosted.
Entries will be open on August 19, 20 and 21 from 9am to 7pm at Coen Scholtz Recreation Centre, Mooifontein Road, Birchleigh North. The entry fee is R50 per artwork. The works of art must have been completed in the past 12 months.
The adjudicators for the 2014 Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards are Pieter Swanepoel, Nontobeko Ntombela, Leanne Engelberg, Louise Kritzinger and Richman Buthelezi.
Selected artwork will be exhibited at the opening function and prize-giving ceremony at Coen Scholtz Recreation Centre from September 20 to October 12.
“A competition of this nature serves as a platform to encourage artists to transcend limitations, reconfigure and manipulate contemporary cultural, social and political landscapes. It’s a platform for artists to employ various ways to express metaphors and their aesthetic sensibility to reflect the world we live in,” said Ekurhuleni’s spokesman, Themba Gadebe.
The City of Ekurhuleni is privileged to associate this national fine arts competition with the acclaimed resistance artist, Thami Mnyele, who gave a voice to the nation through his God given talent.
This year’s competition will be presented in collaboration with the Lizamore & Associates Mentorship Programme. The Lizamore & Associates Gallery has been showing the work of new and established contemporary South African artists for over 10 years.
The total prize money of the competition amounts to R100 000, of which the winner will receive R40 000.
An Ekurhuleni prize of R30 000 will be awarded to a local artist as well as four merit prizes of R7 500 each for multi and new media, painting, art on and sculpture.
