Earthquakes: 10 things you should know about today’s quakes

There had been 648 earthquakes in the past 7 days (M1.5 or greater)

1. Until 3.06pm on Tuesday, August 5, there had been 95 earthquakes around the world, of which the one in Orkney in North West Province was the strongest.

2. The Orkney quake registered a 5.3 magnitude (10km depth) on the Richter Scale and hit the country shortly before 1.30pm.

3. Since this earthquake two others had already occurred in Southern Alaska, both an hour after the one in South Africa. The first Alaskan quake registered 2.4 and the second 1.9, both at 0 depth.

4. There had been 648 earthquakes in the past 7 days (M1.5 or greater).

5. There had been 3 060 earthquakes in the past month (M1.5 or greater).

6. There had been 38 089 earthquakes in the past year (M1.5 or greater).

7. The strongest earthquake registered this week was 6.9 in the Fed. States of Micronesia.

8. The earthquake in the Fed. States of Micronesia was also the strongest this month.

9. The strongest earthquake this year registered 8.2 in Iquique, Tarapaca, Chile.

10. At about the same time South Africa felt its earthquake, two others also occurred – 3.2 magnitude, 10 km depth, in Hawaii, Hawaii; and 1.8 magnitude, 73 km depth, in Central Alaska.
