The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is taking heed of the warning issued by the Council for Geoscience that the country should anticipate aftershocks after Tuesday’s earthquake.
The metro’s emergency and disaster management department advises communities that as and when similar incidents of tremors are experienced, people should protect themselves in the following way:
Evacuate buildings using evacuation protocols in their Emergency Plans;
In the event that evacuation from the building is not possible, people should hide underneath solid structures such as tables; and
Contact the 24-hour emergency communication centre to report damaged infrastructure and/or injured or dead persons. The number to be used for emergencies is 011 458 0911 or 10177 from a Telkom line and/or 112 from a mobile phone.
