Update: Three people were shot during Tembisa protests

“Birch Acres is a no go area this morning, the whole area has been barricaded and one cannot leave or enter the place,” said spokesman Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

Protesters from Sophiatown, in Tembisa, next to Birch Acres started burning tyres and placing rocks on the roads at around 3am on Friday. August 29.

Residents of the informal settlement are blocking the main road between Tembisa and Kempton Park. They are protesting against poor service delivery. Motorists are advertised to use alternative routes.

The spokesperson of the Sophiatown Concerned Group Mr Roald Mashapha, said three people were shot and injured by the police early this morning.’public order police arrived here shortly after 4am and started shooting randomly. The injured have been taken to Tembisa Hospital
