Highlands Park FC bemoans missed chances

Highlands Park FC should have wondered what they did wrong to the football gods to deserve such a hash punishment when they lost 1-0 to Vasco Da Gama in an entertaining National Football Division (NFD) league game played at Makhulong Stadium on Sunday.

The local boys missed more than 10 clear chances in the first half, but ended up on the losing side after they conceded a penalty in the dying minutes of the game.

Highlands Park FC players attacked their opponents from the start of the game and had the visitors’ defence in sixes and sevens whenever they had the ball.

They nearly opened their account in the second minute, but their lethal striker from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nicholas Boke, shot straight to the ‘keeper who managed to palm the ball over the goal posts.

Samukelo Nkosi was also denied by the ‘keeper after a solo from the right flank. The score sheet was still asking for numbers at the break.

Highlands Park FC players continued pressurising their opponents in the second half, but their undoing was instead of shooting from a distance, they tried to walk the ball into the net.

In the dying minutes of the game, the visitors were given a dubious penalty.

Former Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars striker, Boitumelo Lebyane, beat the ‘keeper from the penalty mark to give his team a 1-0 victory.
