Phomolong FC makes the finals

Phomolong FC squeezed into the finals of the top eight competition when thy beat Sangweni FC 4-3 on penalties at the Sangweni grounds on Sunday.

The home side, Sangweni FC, tried to intimidate the opposition with rough tackling from the first whistle. They reminded yours truly about the hard tacklers of yesteryear, like Brian Pomroy of Wits University and Julie Kaplan of Dion Highlands Park.

But despite the rough tackling, the players could not contain the high flying boys from Phomolong.

Their right full back, Sydney Rathobela, was at his best, thwarting dangerous moves from their opponents.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Brian Ngwenya’s free kick slipped through the ‘keeper’s hands into the net. It was 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, the visitors started toying with their opponents. Instead of increasing the score, they wasted time, playing for the gallery.

They paid dearly when the locals equalized.

The game ended with the scores level at 1-1.

Phomolong FC won the game 4-3 on penalties.
