EKURHULENI’S first essay competition wants to unleash the writing potential in grade 5 to 11 learners.
This year, students have to write an essay based on the theme, “Are we walking in the footsteps of OR Tambo?”.
Through reflecting on the principled life of the late struggle icon, Oliver Reginald Tambo, the City hopes to instil within pupils some valuable life lessons.
For the essay, learners will have to do their own research as well as visit exhibitions currently on display at libraries across Ekurhuleni in order to obtain relevant information on Tambo’s life and legacy, focusing on what he stood for.
Entry forms are available at libraries and can be submitted at the libraries or electronically at Ben.Segabutla@ekurhuleni.gov.za or Bafana.Mohulo@ekurhuleni.gov.za.
The closing date for submissions is October 23 and the prize-giving ceremony will take place on October 27 at the OR Tambo memorial lecture gala dinner.
Students can enter in three different categories, junior for grades 5 to seven, intermediate for grades eight and nine and senior for grades 10 and 11.
Winners of the competition will walk away with gadgets such as tablets, e-book readers and MP3 players.
