R30-million old age home opens in Tembisa
The elderly community of Tembisa now have a place to live where they will have people around to care for them
AN R30-million old age home has been launched in Tembisa by the Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko, and Ekurhuleni Member of Mayoral Committee for Health, Makhosazana Twala.
The home is a frail-care residential facility that can accommodate up to 56 beneficiaries above the age of 60 and for certain reasons, can no longer live with their relatives or significant others.
The home is part of the province’s 20 Priority Township Programme. Residential facilities for older persons was one of the priorities identified under the social infrastructure stream of the programme.
“It gives me great pleasure to open this old age home,” Mazibuko said. “There are already eleven people living here and everyone is welcome to apply.”
The nursing staff compliment comprises 12 care workers, two enrolled nurses, two auxiliary nurses and one professional nurse.
Residents of the home will partake in physical activities to make sure they stay fit and keep chronic diseases at bay. They are encouraged to be involved with hand craft activities such as bead work and knitting, which can contribute to raising funds for the home.
To be accepted in the facility, one will have to apply and undergo an assessment based on certain criteria. Only applicants who are in a frail condition and do not have anyone to care for them during the day will be considered.
