CHURCHES now have an extra month to register their organisations.
The previous deadline was October 10 but it has been extended to November 10.
The extension of the registration period was due to an overwhelming response from religious communities interested in registering.
The benefit of registering is that it allows churches access to land and municipal facilities through an accreditation process, which determines the eligibility of religious institutions. This stems from discussions held at the religious summit in Germiston in December.
Accreditation will provide the metro with an indication for whether or not church houses meet the criteria for bidding for the use of council land or facilities.
Once a religious institution has been given accreditation, it will be prioritised for the use of municipal facilities as a place of worship.
Churches that are interested can collect and submit their accreditation forms from their nearest customer care centre. The forms will be collected from the customer care centre and feedback will be given to the applicants after the database has been formed.
