Tributes pour in for Senzo

National captain remembered.

The brutal killing of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa, sent shockwaves throughout South Africa.

Meyiwa was shot and killed at his girlfriend’s home in Vosloorus over the weekend.

Within minutes after the announcement of his death, tributes started pouring in from all over the world.

His father, Mr Samuel Meyiwa, said the bullet that killed his son took part of his soul away.

“I don’t know whether I am coming or going,” he said shortly after he heard of his son’s death.

Meanwhile, the president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) in Ekurhuleni, Mr Louis “Sprinter” Tshakoane, said SAFA Ekurhuleni would sends its heartfelt condolences to the Meyiwa family and the soccer fraternity at large.

“Even though death is a common denominator, his death rocked the whole world. This is a national crisis. We believe the Meyiwa family, FIFA, SAFA and the community at large will be consoled by God Himself through this difficult time,” he said.

From the Tembisa United Football Association (TUFA), Mr Sinkie Mnisi said, “On behalf of TUFA, we feel that Meyiwa’s demise is a sad loss to football in general. He was on top of his game. Only God knows why he had to leave us so soon. May his soul rest in peace.”

Bafana Bafana’s number one fan, Mr Saddam Maake, said the passing of Senzo Meyiwa has left soccer fans without one of the best goalkeepers in the country.

“As fans, we are appealing to the government to bring back the death penalty. Armed robbers are robbing us of our loved ones every day in the country. We are also calling on the suspects to hand themselves over to the police to face the music. May his soul rest in peace,” he told The Tembisan.

Orlando Pirates’ die-hard fan in Tembisa, Mr Jack Sithole, said both Pirates and the national team were robbed of an international star who still had a lot to offer.

“I am heartbroken. Since I heard the news on Sunday night, I cannot sleep. It is high time that government brings back the death penalty. We cannot keep on singing praises about the constitution when our people are brutally killed by robbers every day. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” he said.
