Disabled show their mettle
Disabled residents, from across the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) participated in the Disability Spirit Games at the Mehlaring Stadium on Friday last week.
Residents competed in different sporting codes, like tennis, table tennis and swing ball.
Nolwazi Magagula had caregivers and fellow athletes cheering whenever she was in action.
When participating in darts, she aimed like a well-trained soldier and managed to hit the target at least three times in a row.
The other athlete who showcased her talent was Zodwa Mohlala, from Tsakane.
Some of the mentally disabled athletes were good in hockey, but decided to show their dancing skills in the middle of a games, without worrying about what the caregivers were telling them.

During a short interview with Nolwazi Magagula, who is deaf, it was clear she was enjoying her game.
Responding through an interpreter, she said she would like to get a chance to compete with other disabled people from around the world.
“I am appealing to the EMM to organise games against other municipalities so that we can keep on polishing our skills. I am also calling on those who are not disabled to respect and encourage us when we participate in different sporting codes,” she said.
