Woman believes she was poisoned by her friend

She said she realised her mince turned green, and then knew something was not right

A Kempton Park woman believes she was almost poisoned by someone she considered to be her friend

Gladys Williams (53), who lives with her husband, Johannes van der Walt, had invited the woman over to her flat to share a meal with her for lunch in August.

“I had cooked some mince and rice for us. I stepped out to go the shops quickly to buy some juice for us. When I came back and sat down to eat, my mince looked funny,” Williams said.

She said it had started turning green and when she questioned her friend about it, she denied knowing anything.

“What made me even more suspicious was the fact that earlier that day she had shown me a green liquid in a bottle that she said could be used to test if jewellery was real gold.”

The woman had earlier asked to test Williams’ jewellery, including her wedding ring. “We did check my rings and found they were indeed pure gold.”

Seeing that the mince had turned the same green colour as the substance, Williams put two and two together that this might have been what her friend had poured into her mince.

“I went to take a shower and left her in the sitting room. When I came back, she had locked me in my flat and left with the keys.”

The friend had stolen the couple’s wedding rings, a gold ring and two cell phones.

“Looking back now, I actually shouldn’t have left her in the room. I should have told her to leave,” Williams recalled.

Her husband was also disappointed about what happened.

“This is someone who we’ve known for years and thought was our friend. We had let her into our home and trusted her, then she goes out and does this to my wife,” Van Der Walt said.

“We want to warn other people about her, because she comes to our block of flats and sometimes helps people with cleaning and offers to look after their babies.”

A case of theft was opened with the Kempton Park SAPS.
