WITH the unleashing of the new peace corps, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is gearing up to make the City safe during the festive season.
750 peace corps members were passed out at Mehlareng Stadium in Tembisa to increase Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police visibility and to curb crime during the holidays.
The men and women in green uniforms (peace corps) will assist in the city’s crime prevention, by-law enforcement and social crime prevention efforts.
The peace corps will be assisting in reporting service delivery hiccups like power outages and water and sewer pipe bursts as and when they get exposed to such.
According to the executive mayor, Clr Mondi Gungubele, with the festive season already here, there could not have been a better time to unleash these members onto the streets of Ekurhuleni.
“We all know that while the festive is seen as a time for relaxation and celebration of a year that was, it has also become one of the most notorious periods for crime in the country.
As communities celebrate in peace, thugs prowl our streets looking for the nearest target to attack,” Gungubele said.
