Video shows EMPD officer firing shot in altercation with taxi driver
The case has been referred to the metro police's integrity and standards committee for investigation
AN Ekurhuleni metro police officer will on Monday give his side of the story after a video was placed on Facebook showing him firing a shot into the air in an altercation with a taxi driver in Birchleigh North.
The video was published on Facebook on Saturday. It shows how the officer apparently confiscates the taxi’s licence disc, which infuriates the driver.
The driver demands it back but the officer refuses. The driver then gets aggressive and confronts the officer. The men get involved in a scuffle and the metro police officer fires a shot into the air.
Instead of it calming the situation, the taxi driver gets more aggressive, shouting: “Shoot me, shoot me.” As the metro police officer walks away, the driver keeps following him.
A man, apparently the owner of the taxi, later arrives and pulls the driver away from the officer.
Although metro police spokesman, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, confirmed the incident, he said little information was available at this stage. They are not sure when the incident occurred.
The case has been referred to the metro police’s integrity and standards committee for investigation. The officer will be interviewed on Monday.
