DESPITE a new sewer line being installed around a Bonaero Park wetland, sewage had been flowing in the bird pan for days as a result of a blocked manhole.
A Bonaero Park resident, Lynn Botha, said she found it difficult to even open her windows in the hot weather conditions because of the stench coming from the leak just outside her house on the corner of Marignane Drive and Caro Road in Bonaero Park.
The contaminated water is also flowing into the bird sanctuary.
Botha and her daughter-in-law, Jeanetta Botha, along with other residents in the area, had been reporting the leak to the metro since Friday, to no avail.
DA ward councillor André du Plessis said the leakage had been a continual problem and a new sewer line had recently been installed.
“It’s totally unacceptable. The new sewer line around the wetland has been completed recently and now the manhole is already blocked,” he said.
Du Plessis said the contractors had taken a year longer to complete the project and that he suspected they had not done an effective job.
“Council spent millions on this project and I’m highly disappointed that there’s no supervision and monitoring of the sewer line to ensure that it is in order. The lack of response from the metro in sorting this out is also disappointing,” he added.
“The sewage is contaminating the wetland and I’m disappointed that the council is failing to protect the wetland.”
He said he had been reporting the matter for the past three days with no progress.
The matter has been referred to the metro for comment.
