Fans believe Bafana Bafana will progress

Even though it looks like Bafana Bafana will have a mountain to climb to qualify for the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations competition (AFCON), some local fans are still optimistic.

One of the team’s well-known female supporters, Mama Joice Chauke, said she is confident Bafana Bafana will beat Senegal.

“Even though I am hurt by the way we lost to Algeria on Monday night, I still feel we have what it takes to win the last two games. We just have to be positive and work as a team like we did on Tuesday,” she said.

When asked what caused the national team to lose, she said even though she does not want to blame individual players, she blames Tokelo Rantie for the team’s misfortunes.

“Rantie missed a lot of chances during the game and giving him the penalty was a mistake. We have skilful players in the team, like Andile Jali, Oupa Manyisa and Sibusiso Vilakazi. They are good at penalties. I wonder who allowed him to take that penalty? It is now water under the bridge and we have to regroup and face our next opponents,” she said.

She added that she could not sleep on Monday night after the game.

“My heart was bleeding. That penalty miss reminded me of Bernad Parker’s own goal against Ethiopia, which cost us a place in the World Cup a few years ago. I am still hurt, but the show goes on,” she said. Bafana Bafana welcomes back Mulomowandau Mathoho and Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who missed the game through suspensions.
