Taxi bosses smoke peace pipe
Taxi owners in Tembisa and the surrounding areas have smoked the peace pipe and signed a peace agreement at the Kempton Park Civic Centre recently.
This comes after the Ekurhuleni Regional Taxi Council intervened in the fight between different taxi associations in the area.
The associations concerned are the Midrand Taxi Association (Midta), the Tembisa Pretoria Taxi Association (Tepta), the Simunye Taxi Association and the Tembisa Local Taxi Association (Telta).
The general secretary of Telta, Mr Peter Ntsoane, said after they signed an agreement, they selected a committee that will monitor and make sure all parties follow the agreement.
“We have decided to put our differences aside and work together as a unit for the benefit of our passengers. All four associations involved have two members each in the selected committee, and so far things are running smoothly,” he said.
When asked why members of the committee were at Sangweni Taxi Rank on Tuesday morning, he said they were monitoring the situation.
“We are here to ensure the agreement is followed to the letter. We would also like to thank all the associations for keeping to the agreement up to this stage, and we are optimistic that the days of bickering about routes is over,” he said.
Meanwhile, the public relations officer of the Ekurhuleni Taxi Council, Mr Collen Moabelo, said he is happy the rival taxi associations have now smoked the peace pipe and are working together in peace and harmony.
“As the council, it is our responsibility to promote peace and good working relationships within all the taxi associations in the region,” he said.
