SUBSTANCE abuse, unprotected sex, crime, unemployment and many other social ills are a threat to the development and advancement of many young people in the townships.
Hundreds of youngsters from all over Ekurhuleni gathered to tackle these issues, which affect their daily lives, at a youth indaba convened by the City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Youth Ministries in Tsakane.
Representatives from various organisations, including the city’s economic development department, the NYDA and Big Break Legacy, enlightened the youth about various opportunities, including educational bursaries and funds for entrepreneurs.
There are lots of investors and business people who have invested their time and money towards ensuring that the youth of Ekurhuleni realises its dreams.
Young people need to always be on the lookout for opportunities that can benefit them,” said Sthembiso Garane from the economic development department. Seipati “Twasa” Seoke of Lesedi FM left the youth wanting more after a moving sermon about being true to oneself and following your dreams, while Ndaba Mandela spoke on how HIV and Aids had affected his life.
He cautioned the youth about the dangers of engaging in unprotected sex and encouraged everyone to know their HIV status.
The gathering inspired young people to affiliate to nearby churches for their spiritual upliftment and support, which will also discourage them from participating in unrighteous activities.
