STOLEN fittings, which caused a major water leak, resulted in many residents being without water on April 16 and 17.
And then, when the metro became aware of the problem, the leak could not be fixed all at once.
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, said Ekurhuleni Metro has experienced “technical problems on the P91 and Zuurfontein Road”, where the leak occurred.
“The municipality was informed about this leak last week. Water leakage could not be fixed all at once. It was a long process that led to some areas being without water,” he said.
The most affected areas were Chloorkop industrial, Terenure and Kempton West. He said metro officials managed to decrease the flow on April 17 while a consultation process with Rand Water to assist in closing the water from their side was underway.
Metro officials attended to the leak on Wednesday morning, April 22, and the leak was finally stopped.
Gadebe said fittings were stolen from inside the metro’s water chamber, as well as from Rand Water’s chambers.
