IT was back to square one for a few Bonaero Park residents after a project by the metro to repair damaged storm water drains only led to more damage.
Following two and a half years of requests and back and forth pleading from residents and ward councillor André du Plessis, as well as with help from Afriforum Kempton, the metro had finally embarked on a project to repair blocked storm water drains on Marignane and Mirabel avenues, as well as Caro Road.
But this turned sour.

“After countless reports to the metro regarding the problems, the municipality started to replace damaged drains, unblock them and started with temporary repairs to potholes in February,” a resident reported.
However, they replaced the covers on only some of the new drains and forgot one vital part: to actually unblock the drains, leading to yet another sewage spill recently which was only fixed after four days. The sewage overflowed into the bird sanctuary at the corner of Caro Street and Marignane Avenue.
To top all off, upon returning to clean up the sewage spills and fix the unblocked drains, metro workers allegedly did not put back the covers on the storm water drains, leaving them open.
This now poses a great danger for residents, especially pedestrians, school kids and children who play in the streets.
“We now sit with open drain holes everywhere and only a few of the drains are covered. So actually, the service delivery conditions have worsened.”
