CONCERNED resident Ray Haines is distressed that the Ekurhuleni Metro has not done anything about a bridge wall that is collapsing in De Villiers Avenue, in Van Riebeeck Park.
The damage is slowly becoming worse as the rain has continued to contribute to the deterioration of the bridge.
“I’m just wondering when the bridge will be made safe and both lanes made usable for the traffic, or is the municipality first waiting for a tragic mishap or accident to happen before making it safe?” asked Haines.
Ward 16 DA councillor Jaco Terblanche said a water pipe that burst three years ago resulted in a sink-hole, which has caused the bridge to start collapsing.
“There are a few factors standing in the way of the repairs of the damage, one is that a consultant needs to be appointed, and secondly there’s no budget,” said Terblanche.
He added that safety barriers were put around the damaged road, but the public kept on removing these barricades which was of great concern.
The matter, he said, was on his follow-up list.
