Phomolong residents blocked Andrew Mapheto Drive this morning in an effort to get Liviero management to engage with the community about their concerns.
According to the community, this EPWP project was expected to empower them by creating jobs for the residents of Phomolong, specifically ward 12 and ward 13.
The community said their major problem is with the CLO, Agnes Ramatje, who allegedly hires people from other townships like Soweto, Alexandra and Krugersdorp.
Residents also claim foreign nationals, who do not have the proper work permits, are hired to work on the project.
A community member, who is part of the Labour Desk in a political party, said when the CLO was questioned why she didn’t employ women from Phomolong, she replied that the work was difficult and reserved for men only.
The residents say they were surprised to find women working on the site, performing light jobs.
It is alleged that Ms Ramatje is charging R700 to people looking for employment in the BRT project.
There are also allegations of nepotism against her.
Some employees deployed to the project also claim they are worried, as they will not be paid for the day, due to the demonstrations.
A request for comment was sent to the EMM.
At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
