Angry residents demand houses

Residents claim to have been on the housing waiting list since 1996.

Residents of Tembisa, who claim they have been on the housing waiting list since 1996, say they are now fed-up and tired of waiting.

According to some of the residents, they received Housing Subsidy System (HSS) forms which prove the houses are rightfully theirs.

“Officials said we would be given houses in Strydom Park. But today, other people are being allocated houses and we are being ignored,” said one of the residents.

The Department of Human Settlement, together with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), has allocated about 30 residents from Madelakufa 1 and 2, the Winnie Mandela Informal Settlement and Freedom Square into the 200 RDP houses which are ready for allocation.

In contrast to the residents’ complaints, Mr Motsamai Motlhaolwa who is the spokesperson from the Department of Human Settlement, said the people currently being allocated the houses are the rightful beneficiaries.

“There are 200 RDP houses ready for allocation. We are hoping to finish the allocations by next week Friday. We aim to allocate 30 people per day,” he added.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers and the Red Ants are monitoring the scene.

“The two units have stopped the protesting residents from going to the houses,” said The Tembisan’s journalist, Jantji Ngwenyama.
