Teen saves his brother from burning Kempton West home

Exploding gas cylinders apparently contributed to the fire spreading so quickly

AN investigation will be launched to determine the cause of a fire which left a Kempton Park West home completely destroyed on Wednesday, June 24.

The fire started at about 10am in a room that is rented by a woman and her two sons.

Nonkie Khoza, the house owner’s daughter, said: “The 13-year-old boy went into the room and saw sparks from the extension cord lying on the floor. He went to the bathroom to get water but when he came back, the curtains were already on fire. He grabbed his brother and ran out of the house.”

The boy’s fast thinking saved both their lives as the flames spread quickly through the whole house, destroying eight other tenants’ rooms and belongings.

Samson Shaba, a neighbour, saw smoke billowing from the back door and immediately phoned the fire brigade.

The fire brigade received the call at 10.17am and by 10.27am the first firefighters were on the scene, said William Ntladi, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Emergency Services.

“On arrival the house was well alight. Exploding gas cylinders apparently contributed to the fire spreading so quickly,” he said.
