A recent statement issued by the Ekurhuleni Metro regarding free learner’s licences being offered to learners, led to some confusion among residents.
Express received complaints about the given number never being answered and that the local licensing department was not aware of the project.
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, said the manager at the Kempton Park centre was not aware of the programme as the centre was not one of the selected facilities for this project.
Only the Boksburg, Edenvale, Thokoza and Tsakane centres are partaking, as requested by the Gauteng Department of Transport.
“Learners from all areas will be tested at the participating centres,” Gadebe said.
Learners can only take part in the programme through their schools.
The Gauteng Department of Transport, through the Department of Education, will make arrangements with the schools. Learners cannot apply individually.
The Gauteng Provincial Government departments, who are running this programme, have the list of schools they will be targeting.
Learners are advised to enquire from their school principals if they will be part of the programme. The roll-out will start when schools reconvene after the winter break, Gadebe said.
“The number given is working, but is extremely busy due to the number of calls received since the media release,” he added.
