Better ticketing system for Gautrain in pipeline

The upgrade will cover the entire Gautrain network.

Gautrain users will, in 2017, be able to top up their cards online or with a smartphone.

The other improvement for the system will allow users to access Gautrain services with their local or international bank-issued contactless credit and debit cards.

Announcing these changes on Wednesday, Gauteng transport MEC, Dr Ismail Vadi, also said the platform at the airport station would be extended. The extension will allow a four-car train-set as opposed to the present two cars.

The upgrade will cover the entire Gautrain network.

The additional functionalities are expected to go online in 2017 and will be rolled out progressively, starting with a pilot on the East/West link between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton.

“The planned enhancements will significantly improve access to Gautrain services together with an improved passenger experience that will support passenger growth,” said Vadi.
