R90-m facelift for Alberton Civic Centre hall before merger

The work is being done in preparation of the merger of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality with Lesedi Local Municipality

Alberton Civic Centre hall will receive a R90 million facelift over the next 12 months.

The venue will be closed to the public to make way for the essential renovations that will see the venue being converted into a completely new facility.

The scope of work will include external upgrades such as the building elements, parking garages, access control and guard house.

The work is being done in preparation of the merger of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality with Lesedi Local Municipality after next year’s local government elections. Once the work is completed, council will utilise the venue until the current chambers in Germiston are upgraded.

The construction process is set to commence at the beginning of August and is scheduled to be concluded at the end of August 2016. The construction work will not affect customer service at Alberton Customer Care Centre and the rates hall will still be fully operational for the duration of the upgrades.

Patrons who had made bookings to utilise the hall have, over the past couple of months, been notified of the work and a cancellation process has taken place. This included the reimbursement of booking fees which had already been paid and moving bookings to other venues where possible.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the upgrade work.
