Hijacked cigarette van found by EMPD within 20 minutes

A hijacked vehicle was also found quickly last week

A hijacked vehicle transporting cigarettes was recovered by the metro police within 20 minutes after the robbery.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said the VW Transporter panel van was hijacked on Thursday last week 12.10pm along Jones Road. An EMPD Loss Control and Investigations member was able to locate the vehicle at the intersection of Industry and Atom roads in Isando.

The assailants had abandoned the vehicle with its cargo.

Kgasago said the quick-thinking driver of the panel van immediately made his employers aware of the hijacking and the tracker was activated. Some of the recovered cigarette boxes were found in the vehicle and others on Joist Street. The vehicle was found undamaged.

Police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators of the crime.

The vehicle was taken to the SAPS Pound in Van Ryn, Benoni.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday last week at around 9pm, a VW Polo was hijacked along Allandale Road near Ebony Park. The suspects drove it in the direction of Tembisa.

At 9.35pm, with the assistance of the tracking system, the VW Polo was found abandoned next to Lerato Flats in Difateng section, Tembisa.
