Dr Daisy Pekane had been placed on special leave with immediate effect

Dr Daisy Pekane had been placed on special leave with immediate effect after Mahlangu paid a surprise visit to the hospital on Wednesday, the Gauteng health department said.

It was not revealed in a statement what the nature of the complaints were and whether an investigation was underway.
The acting chief executive appointed to replace Pekane is Dr Barbara-Ann Ribeiro, a former clinical manager at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
