Sanitary pad drive launched in Tembisa

All the sanitary pads collected will be distributed among underprivileged young girls

A young Esther Park woman has thrown her weight behind the TembisaPadDrive2015 in Tembisa.

Kgothatso Pule was approached by the founders of the drive, Lebogang Vanessa Moche and Boitumelo Nqai, from Tembisa, and immediately decided to help.

“I was touched when the plight of young girls from Tembisa, who do not have access to and the necessary funds to buy sanitary pads, was brought to my attention. They lose confidence and miss school during that time of the month,” Pule said.

“This hit close to home because I am a young woman too. We take such things for granted but unknowingly there’s a young girl out there who misses school not because she wants to but because it’s that time of the month and she doesn’t have a pad to wear.”

An initiative was brought forward by young Tembisa women who feel they should let the East Rand realise this problem so that we can all help where we can.

The TembisaPadDrive is an initiative for collecting any brand of sanitary pads and distributing them to underprivileged young girls, alongside rendering them education on puberty, hygiene and health wellness as far as that time of the month is concerned.

“As young women, we couldn’t sit any longer and continue blaming the government for not giving underprivileged young girls access to free sanitary pads. What if it will never happen? This is why we decided to get up and do something about it,” Moche and Nqai said.

All the sanitary pads collected will be distributed among underprivileged young girls, from foster care homes to schools and outside. Underprivileged young girls living under parental guidance will also be invited to a local park or hall and get educated about puberty.

For this project to get off the ground, companies and individuals are urged to come on board.
