MEC gives new hope for Kempton Park Hospital

Different options are on the table

THE Gauteng infrastructure MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza,has given new hope for Kempton Park Hospital to be reopened.

She told Eyewitness News the hospital would either be refurbished or rebuilt.

Mayathula-Khoza visited the abandoned facility for the first time on Thursday.

She told EWN: “The minute I entered at the gate, I couldn’t believe what I saw. I am seeing it for the first time, but what is good about it is that there is a plan already from the Gauteng government to either refurbish, renovate or to build it from scratch.”

This could cost more than R1 billion, and while her department has assessed the situation, it is ultimately up to the health department to decide on the way forward.

While a hospital in this area could take the pressure off other facilities, it may only be operational in 2019.
