Oscar Pistorius will not be released on parole on Friday.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services earlier today, the Minister, Adv Michael Masutha, said it was decided to refer the decision to place Pistorius under correctional supervision to the Correctional Supervision and Parole Review Board.
The Minister received a petition from the Progressive Women’s Movement of SA on August 17, wherein they expressed their opposition to Pistorius’ imminent release.
In considering the petition it became desirable that he (the Minister) peruses the offender’s profile as well as the decision of the parole board.
The Minister said it was apparent that the decision to release him on August 21 was made prematurely on June 5 when Pistorius was not eligible to be considered at all.
By law Pistorius must serve one sixth of his five years, which is 10 months. At the time of the decision he had served only over six months.
The earlier decision of the parole board has thus been suspended under the parole review board has decided on the matter.
