A 20-year-old man appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Members of the Benoni K9 Unit were patrolling in Kempton when they stopped and searched the suspect and two other people he was walking with. Police found the suspect carrying a 9mm pistol.
Kempton SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, confirmed that the arrest was made at 9.30pm on August 15 on the corner of Cactus and Mango Streets in Allen Grove.
“The suspect could not produce a firearm licence and claimed he bought the firearm from someone in Tembisa,” Mtshali said.
In an unrelated incident, a Protea Coin Group investigating officer caught two robbers just after they stole money from a woman at an ATM inside Kempton Square Shopping Centre in the CBD.
The incident happened on August 10 at 10.55am.
“The alleged suspects, aged 30 and 31, had just robbed a female victim of R500 cash after she had withdrawn money from an ATM,” Mtshali said.
The suspects were charged with robbery.
