A trap set by police and a customer did just the trick to catch out a corrupt Ekurhuleni Metro employee.
On August 13, at about 3pm, Kempton Park SAPS managed to arrest the 40-year-old man, who works at Kempton Park Civic Centre, on charges of corruption.
According to police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, the arrest came after a tip-off police received from the suspect’s superior at work.
According to the superior, the official demanded money from a Birch Acres resident when wanted to submit plans for a house renovation.”It is alleged the Birch Acres resident went to the civic centre council offices in Kempton Park on August 4 to submit a house plan for approval. She was assisted by the alleged suspect who demanded R1 600 and promised the plan would be approved sooner,” Mtshali explained.
“She paid the suspect in cash but he then allegedly demanded a further R770, which she didn’t give to him. The victim left but was suspicious and, as a result, she made some inquiries. She was advised to consult with the suspect’s superior, who then tipped off the police about the incident.”
A trap was set up, where the victim paid a visit to the suspect at his office and gave him the extra R770. He promised that her plan would be approved by the end of September. “That’s when police officers approached the suspect, searched his office and found the cash. He was arrested on the spot,” said Mtshali.
