RESIDENTS of Birch Acres rolled up their sleeves to pull out overgrown weeds, pick up broken bottles and sweep away litter in an effort to restore the natural beauty of Maraboe Park on Flamink Street.
On Saturday, August 15, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni and community members, spent the morning cleaning the park in order to create a safe environment for school children to play after school.
The volunteers also cleaned up Kwartel Street and Pongolarivier Drive.
Young people from the neighbourhood and young missionaries from the United States of America, who are visiting the church, also provided a helping hand by picking up litter on nearby streets.

Project leader of the clean-up campaign, Coba Keizer, who represented the ward for her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was proud to do her bit for her community.
“I always bring my grandchildren to this park for their outdoor leisure, therefore it feels good to participate in this campaign because I know that it will benefit the entire community,” said Keizer.
Ward 13 councillor Ndala Sibanyoni, who also took part, said: “It is always great to work together with the members of the community to achieve one common goal. This park is used by our children and it is therefore our responsibility to take care of it.”
The day turned out to be a true success when 53 volunteers took part in the clean up.
“Saturday was a great success and the project turned out to be big. We managed to work all morning from 8am until 11.30am. We would like to thank Andre Human (executive manager) and his team from the Waste Management Services Department for their support. We would like to clean the park on a more regular basis as a service for the community,” Keizer expressed.
Mormon Helping Hands is a worldwide project where church members throughout the world render a service to communities. About 15 million of the church’s members participate in some kind of service in Africa, Europe and the Americas.
