TWO suspects are recovering in hospital while two of their teenage accomplices are in police custody following their arrest on Wednesday night.
The suspects lost control of the bakkie they were travelling in, which overturned and crashed on Dann Road during a high-speed chase with Alpha Security.
According to Dwaine Hansen of Alpha Security, the company received a phone call from one of their clients at about 9.30pm, informing them that they had just witnessed a house break-in and they were following the suspects’ bakkie on Dann Road.
The security company’s crime prevention team then went to assist.
Kempton SAPS spokesperson Capt Jethro Mtshali confirmed that a couple allegedly noticed the suspects carrying goods and loading them into a silver Mazda bakkie.
“They followed the bakkie and when the suspects noticed they were being followed, they sped off,” Mtshali said.
The couple then called Alpha Security and the metro police, after which a high-speed chase ensued.
MML Security and COPS Security companies also assisted in the pursuit.
The thieves lost control of the bakkie and overturned on Dann Road, next to the Glen Acres Shopping Centre by the Shell garage.
ER24 was called to the scene and treated two of the men for their injuries.
“The two were taken to hospital under police guard and the other two suspects, both aged 19, were detained for further investigations. Police have also impounded the bakkie.”
Several items were found inside the bakkie including a plasma television and DSTV set, which were both damaged as a result of the crash.
A case of theft is currently under investigation.
Kempton SAPS station commander Brig Bertha Kgoroba applauded the community members, security companies and all those involved in helping to catch the suspects.
“If it wasn’t for their vigilance, those criminals would not have been arrested. We would also like to encourage more community members to become observant with regards to crime issues,” Kgoroba said.
