Van Riebeeck Park woman robbed at gunpoint on M2

She stopped after driving over a rock

IN a matter of 10 days another motorist fell victim to rocks being placed at the M2 West entrance.

This time it was Van Riebeeck Park resident Carol Horn, who was on her way to work at 5.20am on August 13.

When she got home that Thursday afternoon, she read about Jacobus Myburgh’s incident at the same place on August 5.

“The rock caused massive damage to the mechanics of my car. I managed to freewheel a short way into the yellow lane. On attempting to start my motor vehicle, the engine could not turn over at all,” she said.

“I telephoned my husband to request he contact a tow truck. On ending the call to my husband, I saw two men crossing the highway, approaching my car. The one man immediately went to the front of my car and looked underneath it (obviously to assess the damage made by the rock). The other came to my window with a gun and showed me to get out of the car.

“I did as I was told and was taken to the front of the motor vehicle and made to sit on the tar in front of the car. The one assailant held the gun to my head and requested my cellphone. I gave this to him but glanced slightly up in the process. He then pushed the butt of the gun harder into my temple and told me ‘not to look at him’,” Horn told Kempton Express.

“I then ensured I kept my eyes on the tar. They took my handbag out of the boot and went through all the consoles in the car to check for other valuables. They backtracked, still holding the gun on me and jumped over the fence where there is bush and some trees.

“As they jumped over, they shouted that I must go and sit in the car. When I saw they were gone, I managed to eventually flag down a motorist who stopped and assisted me. We have since been informed that some American tourists were also robbed at gunpoint in this vicinity about a month ago when they took the wrong turn-off and pulled over.

“These rocks are not placed on this road as a malicious act to damage motor vehicles but it is a ploy to get motorists to stop so they can rob them at gunpoint,” Horn warned.
