Residents apprehend alleged rapist

"The suspect might be linked to another six rape cases which took place in the same area, with the same method, from last month."

Members of the community in Kaalfontein, near Ivory Park, arrested a 30-year-old man after he allegedly raped a 23-year-old woman.

It is believed the incident took place in an open veld, next to a graveyard, on Sunday last week.

The Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, said the woman was on her way to church when the unknown man approached her.

The suspect allegedly forced her to the open veld where he repeatedly raped her.

“The suspect left the victim at the scene after tying her up with a tracksuit. The victim managed to untie herself and ran from the scene to seek help from the community.

Community members managed to follow the suspect until he was arrested in Tswelopele Extension. The SAPS was called and the suspect was detained in at the Ivory Park SAPS,” she said.

The Ivory Park SAPS management thanked the members of the community who contributed in the arrest of the suspect.

“The suspect might be linked to another six rape cases which took place in the same area, with the same method, from last month. The suspect appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on a Monday and was remanded into custody as investigations are still underway,” said W/O Sekgobela.
