A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened with Kempton police

A case of reckless and negligent driving is under investigation following a head-on-collision involving a police vehicle.

The crash happened at the intersection of CR Swart Drive and Pretoria Road on Wednesday evening, at about 6pm.

Kempton police have only been able to confirm that a case was opened and the police officer involved in the crash is a member of Benoni’s Flying Squad.

“It is unclear at this stage what caused the collision and it is still too early to comment until the matter is finalised. The matter will, however, then be forwarded to the senior public prosecutor to make a decision on the issue,” Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton SAPS spokesperson, said.

According to Mtshali, the driver of the police vehicle, a BMW 1 Series, is a warrant officer stationed at Benoni.

The officer sustained minor injuries and was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

The driver of the other car was uninjured, but both vehicles were extensively damaged.
